An article was published by researchers from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in the Journal Pharmaceutical Research in 2008 titled: “Cancer is a Preventable Disease that Requires Major Lifestyle Changes.” This paper is a comprehensive review and analysis of what factors contribute to the development of cancer.
The first point that the authors made was that genes ONLY contributed to 5-10% of overall cancer risk.
On the other hand, environmental factors contributed to 90-95%
- Diet was the #1 factor that contributed to 30-35% of all cancers
- Tobacco accounted for 25-30% of risk
- Infections are 15-20% of risk
- Obesity contributed 10-20%
- Alcohol added another 4-6%
- And Others (environmental toxins and radiation exposure) added 10-15%
